Active Release Technique® is a patented, highly specific soft tissue system that treats problems involving muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. Carpal tunnel, headaches/migraines, back pain, plantar fascitis, sciatica, knee problems, rotator cuff injuries, shoulder pain, and tennis elbow are just a handful of problems that can be resolved quickly and effectively with ART®. These problems arise from injuries and conditions that accumulate due to over-use.

How do overuse injuries occur?

Over used muscles and other tissues undergo the following changes:

  • An acute injury (i.e. muscle strain) or a chronic insult (muscle tension from postural fatigue) is present in the body.
  • As a result of the injury, an accumulation of small tears (microtrauma) occur causing
  • A lack of oxygen to the tissues (hypoxia).  As part of your body's innate healing properites, your body produces tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. The scar tissue can shorten the muscle, binding it down and reducing full range of motion.  As scar tissue builds up, muscles become even shorter and weaker,  tendons receive excess tension resulting in tendonitis, and nerves can be entrapped.  This scar tissue can reduce range of motion and strength and generate pain.

What is an ART session like?

Each session of ART® utilizes a combination of examination and treatment as the ART® provider carefully evalutes the tightness, texture, and movement of the muscle and surrounding structures.  Treatment ofabnormal tissue in the muscles, fascia, nerves, ligaments and tendons is delivered with specific tension throughout very precise patient movements. Certain exercises are prescribed after treatment to help lengthen shorten muscles, strengthen inhibited muscles, and correct posture.

There are about 500 different treatment protocols designed specifically by ART® to correct specific problems for each individual. The specificity and adaptation of ART® is extremely unique.
